Life Management
Beyond RecoveryOur Management Model
The basis of our management model is that any defensive reaction that has become habitual or easily used as a primary response to life’s challenges (including an addiction) is simply the natural response of a limbic system that has become too well oiled. By this I mean that, like any organ system that is used too often, too readily, or too intensely, the limbic system and the neural pathways it uses can become hypertrophied, that is over-developed in its function. Therefore, it becomes the first line of action rather than a last line of defence. This only happens when the more powerful drive of rational deliberation is too under-developed, too fragile, or too artificially sustained that the self-worth it generates is often left wanting. That first line of action gives way to the limbic system and defensive responses become overused, unhealthy, and destructive. It is the reliance on these defensive responses that fuels a crisis in behaviour or survival.
Can you not see that, when we focus primarily on stopping or restraining that natural defence because it has become destructive, we are still leaving ourselves functioning with a weak self-worth that WILL falter again? And that it is then natural for us to simply fall back to the same old limbic system and the methods we have grown accustomed to using just to survive? Here we focus on fuelling rational deliberation as the basis of self-image and self-worth. It can be a study as a process on its own or as an adjunct to any treatment process. In other words you can do it with your rehab treatment, after you have done your rehab, or even on its own instead of the usual rehab (if that is your preference).
The process, however, has to be authentic, stable, and strong. That is why we ask you to go through some heavy analytical and objective self-examination. We call it the search for “The Why”. Then we ask you to be open to some really deep discussions. But remember that, even after you build a strong self-worth, your limbic system and the neural pathways it has used or stimulated are still hypertrophic. It will take a short while but some effort to reach that second level of true intelligent control, but we will be here to help you along. So though it may take a few personalized sessions, such interactions are necessary. Yet the whole experience remains far less expensive than any other supportive or coercive method. Are you ready?

The Prometheum Style
Prometheum Institute posits a unique and positive thrust on the management of unhealthy moods and behaviour. Beyond, or in addition to the current social, medical, and legal systems that have emerged to support, treat, or punish people who respond to life’s challenges inappropriately, we consider that such impropriety results from ignorance rather than corruption and seek to build the wisdom or insight that may be lacking. This is the Prometheus effect – to expand competence through the fire of wisdom.
We see that every human being starts life at the same level regardless of social, genetic, or financial considerations. We are born knowing nothing. Each person must develop intelligence, insight, and perspective. The difference lies in exposure, guidance, and discipline. With these, we can build mental strength to boundless levels. Without them or without a balance of them, we must rely on brutish strengths provided naturally by the limbic system in order to succeed or, at the least, survive.
Prometheum Institute was started and registered with the Department of Colleges and Universities of Ontario as an educational establishment with this focus. We see mental strength as a quality that is not innate, but as one that must be awakened and energized purposefully and appropriately, a proactive responsibility.
